Attachment B6: Position Description, A+ Program Group Leader

I. INTRODUCTION

The position is located in the A+ Program at __________ Elementary School. The A+ Program provides after-school supervision to students in kindergarten through grade six in a stimulating and caring environment. After-school services will be provided after the end of the school day during the regular school year.

The A+ Program Group Leader assists the A+ Program Site Coordinator in implementing the A+ Program at a school site.

II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist the A+ Program Site Coordinator to plan, organize, implement, and promote an after-school program.
   1. Plan with the A+ Program Site Coordinator a program of after-school services and activities.
   2. Establish and maintain good public relations with parents and community.
   3. Enforce policies, rules, and regulations pertaining to the after-school program.
2. Plan and conduct after-school program activities.
   1. Plan and develop after-school activities.
   2. Serve as instructional leader for small groups in after-school activities.
   3. Conduct other related program activities as planned and prescribed by the A+ Program Site Coordinator.
   4. Check students and assist them with personal care and cleanliness.
   5. Observe students for illness, check on injuries, make referrals, and take other appropriate action.
   6. Contact parents as directed by the A+ Program Site Coordinator.
   7. Maintain a safe and secure environment.
   8. Supervise A+ Program Aides.
3. Perform a variety of administrative and clerical tasks.
   1. Maintain attendance and activity records.
   2. Maintain after-school program materials and supplies and take periodic inventory as required.
   3. Process requisitions for instructional materials, supplies, and equipment and check receipt of these items.
   4. Set up and operate audiovisual equipment and instructional aids.
   5. Operate standard office equipment to reproduce a variety of written materials as necessary.
   6. Prepare instructional materials and aids.
4. Miscellaneous
   1. Participate in orientation and other training sessions as required.
   2. Perform other related duties as required.

III. CONTROLS OVER THE POSITION

The position is under the general supervision of the A+ Program Site Coordinator. The duties and responsibilities are carried out independently with respect to prescribed policies and objectives.

IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education: High school diploma/GED 
2. Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old.
3. Experience: At least (1) year of progressively responsible work experience in A+ programs and operations as a Program Aide.
4. Combination of Education and/or Experience:  If applicants do not meet the minimum qualifications, Group Leaders may be approved if they are at least 18 years old, based on employee performance evaluations (applicable private provider supervisor or principal’s recommendation for A+ DOE run programs).

The School Principal must approve exceptions to minimum qualifications.

V. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience: A minimum of 1-2 years of college education, or high school education and two (2) years of experience in working with children.
2. Knowledge of: Grammar, spelling, and word usage; arithmetic; basic classroom and pertinent office routines; and basic instruction-related techniques.
3. Ability to: Understand and follow oral and written instructions; perform a variety of classroom, office, and related clerical tasks; perform various specific instruction-related routines; speak and deal effectively with students; work effectively with others; demonstrate qualities of leadership; organize and instruct groups of children; inspire confidence and enthusiasm of groups and individuals and encourage them in group participation; write narrative reports; and lead small group discussions.
4. Health Requirements: All A+ employees must meet the following health standards (Department of Human Services §17-800-28): 
   1. Provide documentation of negative tuberculosis test and
   2. Provide physical and mental health clearance documenting the employee’s ability to perform child care activities. 
5. Physical Requirements: Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties or cope with the responsibilities of providing care for children: which typically require the ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, glasses permitted; the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, or the ability to compensate satisfactorily; and, the ability to participate in recreational and physical fitness activities consistent with the after-school program.
6. Mental Requirements: Applicants must be mentally able to perform the duties or cope with the responsibilities of providing care for children: which typically require the ability to learn new tasks; adhere to processes and procedures; be able to apply established protocols in a timely manner, maintain focus, complete tasks independently and within a noisy, active environment, make timely decisions in the context of a workflow, ability to communicate with students, parents and visitors.
